       WOOD RESTORATION

The wood has always been an organic material. And therefore, all environmental changes will affect it in many different ways. Drastic or continues changes in temperature and humidity causes constant dilatation and shrinking. When the wood has been used as a structural part of a piece of furniture or a sculpture, the superficial layers normally suffer cracks; crevice or they could even miss a part, small or big, of the piece.

In order to restore the wood master piece, the first step would be to establish what kind of wood we are dealing with. Because of the fact that master pieces have been moved constantly throughout many years, we may find furniture, sculptures or painting from all over the world. Wood reaction will be accordingly its origins. For instance, a tropical wood used to high level of humidity when arriving to a city will lose part if not all the humidity. Therefore the next logical step is to provide this particular piece to a controlled humid environment.

Once the wood variety has been identified, and humidity has been controlled, common parasites must be eliminated. If we are dealing with a piece of furniture, every corner, joint, crack, fracture and hole has to be checked and analyzed. Missing parts must be registered, layers of painting and incrustations or any extra material this piece was glamorized with, including organic or inorganic paint, glazes and varnish.
